Scott Brown
Volunteer Foreman
HOMETOWN: Boise, ID
I am originally from Boise, Idaho and still have extended family there. I have worked as a whitewater rafting guide, small business owner, game warden assistant in Alaska, and flooring salesman. I currently work as a career state park manager, and I’m now blessed to also serve at Crystal Peaks as the volunteer foreman and garden/orchard assistant.
I’ve had the opportunity to work and live in some spectacular places like Cordova, Alaska and Missoula, Montana but landed in Central Oregon due to its dry climate, accessible rivers, wilderness areas, and proximity to Portland, where most of my family lives. I’m blessed beyond measure to be Lorena Leon Brown’s husband and the father of 4 boys ages 12, 24, 27, and 29 years. They constantly remind me how faithful and good God is to provide far more than our expectations!
I had volunteered at Crystal Peaks regularly for over a decade, mainly in the gardens, the orchards, and at Refuge before becoming a part-time staff member in 2024. I felt called to the ranch because of a burning desire to serve Jesus through a Christ-centered youth ministry. My heart so desired to be in a place where I could speak freely of my love for Jesus and grow in the company of a devoted team of Christians for a common purpose.
1 Corinthians 15:58 says, “Always give yourselves fully to the work of the Lord.”. Jesus promised that even a cup of cold water given in His name would not lose its reward. And my prayer, especially at the ranch, is to be steadfast and immovable, always abounding in the work of the Lord and utterly counting on Him.
What is your favorite things about your job?
What I most enjoy about my work at CPYR is leading volunteers in caring for the ranch and sharing my faith with them.
Have you ever had a favorite or unique pet?
My dog Gustavo is my favorite and most goofy animal I have ever cared for, and he is my adventure partner for canoeing, hiking, and swimming in the wilds of Central Oregon.
What is something that you are passionate about doing outside of Crystal Peaks?
I’m passionate about serving in relief mission work outside the USA and have spent a fair amount of time in Honduras, Mexico, Uganda, Costa Rica, and Belize. That said, I believe God is telling me there are things far worse than poverty of resources, and that is poverty of spirit. I believe our community and world need Christ more now than ever before.
